MSW International Field Placement

The School of Social Work offers two international field placement opportunities as part of the MSW program. International field placements are only currently approved for these locations:

Global field placements must meet both CSWE accreditation standards and field curriculum standards, and have professional level credentialed supervision. Due to the length of time necessary for the field office to develop new placements that meet these conditions, students are not able to propose a new placement site. International field placement sites are subject to change. Opportunities are available in both locations to work with a population of the student’s choice for either MSW concentration.

Students must apply for international field placements through the Office of Field Education and must be approved by the director of field education. If approved, the student will complete 40 clock hours of placement preparation in May and 320 clock hours in eight weeks (during June and July) at the international location. During fall semester, the student will be placed in a local agency in Georgia that provides services to a refugee population or similar services to a local population. For example, if a student is placed in Ghana providing services to adults diagnosed as HIV-positive, the student could be placed at AIDS Athens or AIDS Atlanta for the second semester of the concentration placement.

An international field placement may also be taken as an elective course for three credits. Please discuss this option with the Director of Field Education.

For selected students, the international field placement occurs during the summer prior to the final academic year of the MSW program. This opportunity is currently available to extended-time or full-time students for their concentration field placement. Students in an international field placement take SOWK 7055 during the extended summer session and fall semester rather than fall and spring semesters.
