Values & Ethics
The BSW program values the development of competent social workers who are dedicated to social justice and advancing social work knowledge and practice. This includes, but is not limited to, alleviating social injustice, poverty, oppression and discrimination.
The National Association of Social Workers has codified a set of standards regarding professional responsibility to clients, to social work colleagues, to employing organizations, to the social work profession, and to society. The Code of Ethics is available online.
The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program prepares students for beginning generalist social work practice in a variety of settings, including nonprofit, private and public settings.
Goals
We prepare students to:
- Provide culturally competent, generalist social work practice with individuals, families, groups, communities, and organizations;
- Practice according to the principles, values, and ethics that guide the social work profession;
- Acknowledge and support the biological, psychological, social, spiritual, and cultural factors that impact how people function;
- Analyze social policies with the goals of alleviating poverty, oppression and social injustice, as well as advocate for human rights;
- Utilize a planned change model that is based upon an understanding of the ecosystems perspective, is driven by a commitment to social justice, and is grounded in culturally sensitive empirical research and theory; and
- Address the human service needs in the state of Georgia and the surrounding region.
