Cap and Gown Drive: For Students, By Students

Posted March 2012

MSW '12 student Valerie McGuinness is organizing what she calls "A Graduation Assistance Project That Everyone Can Participate In". In order to alleviate regalia costs associated with UGA's upcoming commencement ceremony, McGuinness is hosting a cap and gown drive for graduating students.

The drive allows alumni to donate or loan their old cap and gown in order for future graduates to use them. Additionally, the project works to raise money to buy new gowns for students. So far, the project has been raising funds mainly through bake sales and the Student Faculty Committee (SFC).

This year a total of eight MSW students sought the drive for help. With donated gowns and money from the bake sale, McGuinness was able to assist these students.

"Through the bake sale and generous donation from the parents of a 2nd year student, the SFC and I were able to raise enough money to help get the hoods for everyone who requested assistance. Also, the alumni support has been great, meeting the exact number of people who asked for a recycled gown", reports McGuinness.

However, the project is not yet over. McGuinness still plans to collect gowns and regalia for students. To contact the program for assistance, or to donate gowns, please e-mail Valerie McGuines at
