News from the UGA School of Social Work
As the new dean here at the School of Social Work I am really pleased to welcome everyone to the new academic year. I’m particularly excited to start the year; I’ve been here two months and have had a chance to meet with all of the faculty and staff and am starting to meet our students. I’m looking forward to getting out into the community and meeting alumni, field instructors, and community partners as well. If you are near the School and have time, stop by to introduce yourself!
Our new student orientations have been completed and our students are hard at work in their classes. We are welcoming 57 new BSW students to join our returning 102 undergraduates, 178 new MSW students along with 217 returning MSW students, 16 new MA NPO students and six returning students, and five new PhD students along with 32 returning doctoral students. These are amazingly talented people, with experiences that range from military service to journalism to the arts, and who join us with incredible energy and enthusiasm.
This year also promises to be full of exciting activities and events. We’ve already begun hosting events, holding an open forum for students to discuss the recent tragic shootings across the country both on our Gwinnett campus and in Athens. We will also be having more relaxed social events like the recent “Shaved Ice Shindig” that we held August 24th and 25th. Later in the fall we will be sending nearly 20 faculty members and students to present their research at the annual program meeting of the Council on Social Work Education in Atlanta. Throughout the year we’ll have speakers and gatherings—stay tuned for more information as the year progresses.
On September 15th we will co-host, along with community leaders, a celebration honoring the work of Dean Maurice Daniels as he steps down from his position. Dean Daniels dedicated the past 11 years to growing and improving the School of Social Work with tireless energy. I am personally so grateful to Dean Daniels—he has been a gracious transition mentor to me and his leadership has taken the School to new heights. I have big shoes to fill.Since I’m the “new kid on the block” I hope many of you will be in touch with me. I will be sending out these letters on a monthly basis as a way to let you know what we are doing. Please also let me know your thoughts, experiences, and suggestions regarding the School—I truly value your input. You can reach me at firstname.lastname@example.org or 706.542.5424
