Caps, Gowns, Tassels and Hoods

Are available for ceremony participants at the UGA Bookstore.  Although they will be available for purchase on the day of graduation, it is highly recommended that participants purchase theirs prior to this date.

Photographs of students participating in the ceremony will be taken by Grad Images. They will provide cards to fill out if you wish to purchase pictures.

Group Picture

A group picture will be taken by Grad Images on the Classic Center Atrium steps at approximately 1:15 p.m. before the convocation. The photographer will not wait for stragglers. Please contact Trelle Turner for details.

Volunteer marshals will direct participants in lining up for the processional. The first person to proceed will be the last one to exit the Grand Hall; hence, the last person to proceed will be the first to exit.  Graduates always follow the faculty--never go before them.

Masters and Ph.D. graduates:  The hood should be placed over your right arm. Students follow the faculty when processing and recessing. Ph.D. recipients you may contact your major professor and if he/she can be present, you can have them perform this ritual for you.

Candidates should enter wearing their tassels over the right eye. You will approach the stage from your right.

We will provide participants with a card from the photographer.  Write your name on the card and any special details about how it should be pronounced.  Give the card to a designated person so that your name can be announced.  At this point, MSW, MNPO and PhD graduates will proceed to the faculty member who is assigned to hood them.  BSW students will proceed to the BSW program director.  Each participant will will walk over to Dean Scheyett, who will congratulate them.  If you are part of the ceremony, keep in mind that the photographer will be taking pictures as you are hooded and/or congratulated.

After this, the graduating student will exit the stage and return to the audience seating.

Remember that the last students to come in are the first to leave--the last row will be the first to exit.  Please stay in line and leave by rows following each other.

Diplomas will be mailed to graduates within ten to twelve weeks after graduation from the Registrar’s Office.
