Welcome PhD Students

On behalf of the administration, faculty, staff, current students, and PhD program alumni, we would like to welcome you to the School of Social Work and to your doctoral education. We are all very pleased to have you here with us and we look forward to working with you over the coming years while you complete your degree.

Founded in 1990, the University of Georgia School of Social Work PhD Program has produced over 90 graduates, many of whom have gone on to assume academic positions, whereas others are employed in state, federal, or private agencies with administration, program evaluation and other research responsibilities.

There is a serious shortage of PhD educated social workers both in the academy and in government, so your job prospects upon graduation should be excellent. You are encouraged to fully explore the marvelous intellectual, social, athletic, and artistic resources available within the larger UGA campus and Athens community. Your years with our program will perhaps be the most intellectually challenging period of your life, but also have the potential to be exceedingly rewarding.
We have worked hard to provide you with accurate information pertaining to a comprehensive array of policies and procedures related to our PhD program, but if you have any questions about the doctoral program, contact Dr. Kevin DeWeaver, PhD Program Director, at deweaver@uga.edu or at 706-542-5431. You may also contact Kat Farlowe, the administrative specialist for the program, at kfarlowe@uga.edu or at 706-542-5461, as well as other faculty and the official UGA Graduate School web site.
