Christopher Weatherly
Assistant Professor
Chris Weatherly is a licensed clinical social worker whose research focuses on strengthening rural mental health systems, addressing and treating farmer mental health, and unpacking the intersections of climate change, environmental degradation, species loss, and mental well-being. He has over 10 years of experience as a mental health professional and has worked within acute psychiatric settings, post-disaster, and rural contexts with populations with severe mental illness, suicidality, substance use concerns, and complex trauma histories. He currently offers mental health and peer support for fathers at Athens Parent Wellbeing.
His teaching experience centers around the subjects of mental health, direct practice, and environmental justice. He is passionate about social work education and training/mentoring students to work in resource depleted systems where it may be difficult to maintain a sense of hope due to burnout, vicarious trauma, high caseloads, and continual eroding of the social and economic safety net.
