Dr. Zoe Minor Johnson is a Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Social Work and Coordinator of the Public Behavioral Health Fellowship Program. A licensed clinical social worker with over 20 years of practice experience, Dr. Johnson’s career spans inpatient and outpatient treatment, disability advocacy, racial justice, substance use recovery, youth development, family services, and private practice.

An alumna of the University of Georgia’s MSW program, Dr. Johnson earned her Ph.D. in Counseling and Student Personnel Services from the Mary Frances Early College of Education. She holds graduate faculty appointments in both the School of Social Work and the College of Education, and serves as affiliate faculty with the African Studies Institute and the Institute of Women’s Studies. Her scholarship focuses on Black student experiences and social support in predominantly white institutional environments.

Dr. Johnson is a member of the interdisciplinary care team at the Clarke Middle School Health Center, where she supervises MSW students providing behavioral health services. The clinic—an extension of the Athens Free Clinic under the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership—offers free healthcare to Clarke County school students and staff. It serves as a model for interprofessional experiential learning, addressing health disparities while fostering student competency development.

From 2017 to 2023, Dr. Johnson served as Director of Field Education, overseeing the placement of more than 450 BSW and MSW students annually. She led a team of practicum faculty across three program formats and cultivated partnerships with hundreds of social service agencies, ensuring compliance with CSWE standards and advancing student success.

Prior to her faculty appointment, Dr. Johnson spent over a decade in higher education administration at UGA, where she supported disability access, upheld community standards, and directed multicultural student services. Her leadership was recognized with multiple honors, including the Outstanding Campus Collaboration Award from the Division of Student Affairs and NAACP Advisor of the Year.

Dr. Johnson’s work reflects a dynamic blend of clinical expertise, academic innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Her role as a 2025 UGA Faculty Innovation Fellow exemplifies this approach, as she advances initiatives that translate academic insight into real-world impact across industry and community sectors. In both classroom and community settings, her teaching and mentorship remain grounded in a deep commitment to justice, meaningful learning, and transformative change.
