The journey from a struggling, first generation student to administrative staff and now faculty at the University of Georgia has not been an easy one for Evonne Jones, but she wouldn’t change anything for all of the connections, lessons, wisdom, and experience she’s gained along the way. Evonne Jones has worked in crisis intervention and counseling with individuals and families in a variety of settings, from homeless and domestic violence shelters to institutions of higher education. Her clients have included homeless and runaway youth, youth charged with felonies as adults, college students, and survivors of interpersonal violence, just to name a few. Prior to entering into the profession of social work, Evonne Jones served in various academic and student affairs roles within public colleges and universities, including and primarily the University of Georgia.

Evonne Jones is a native of Georgia, born into a family empowered by their faith belief to serve their community, which includes advocating for and creating positive social change. After obtaining her bachelor’s in business administration from the University of Georgia, Evonne Jones eventually chose to translate those early experiences into a career. She became the first to graduate with her bachelor’s degree and then her master’s degree in her immediate family and extended family respectively.

While pursuing my MSW at the University of Georgia, I took most of my classes at the Gwinnett Campus and thoroughly enjoyed my experience as I was a novice in the field of social work and had very little confidence or understanding in my professional identity or ability. However, with immediate access to fellow students and professors who had decades of experience and amazing stories to share, my confidence and passion for this work flourished. It was worth the drive from the UGA Griffin Campus (where I worked at the time) to the UGA Gwinnett Campus three days per week as I knew that I was always going to leave class feeling empowered and enlightened. I would like to have the same impact and effect on the students that I teach. – Evonne Jones
