A minor in social work provides a knowledge base for persons interested in helping others, with special emphasis in social justice, service, dignity and worth of the individual, importance of human relationships, integrity and professional competence.

Requirements

• Minimum of 2.5 overall GPA.
• Earn at least a “C” grade in each minor course.
• Must take at least 9 hours of upper-division course work.

The Council on Social Work Education’s Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards require all social work students to develop nine competencies. All course content including readings and assignments are linked to specific competencies and associated practice behaviors. These core competencies are:

1. Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior
2. Engage diversity and difference in practice.
3. Advance human rights and social, economic and environmental justice.
4. Engage in practice-informed research and research-informed practice.
5. Engage in policy practice.
6. Engage with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities.
7. Assess individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities.
8. Intervene with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities..
9. Evaluate practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities.

Students apply to the BSW Professional Program during the semester that they are completing the last of their 2000-level / Lower-Division SOWK courses. They must submit an application and be accepted into the BSW Professional Program before they may enroll in any 5000-level courses.

To be eligible to apply to the BSW Professional Program, students must meet the following criteria:

• Currently enrolled in classes at the University of Georgia
• Minimum overall GPA of 2.5
• Completed 60 semester hours
• Earned a B- or higher in all SOWK courses
• Completed or be in progress (IP) to finish all 2000-level, lower-division SOWK courses (i.e., SOWK 2154, SOWK 2154S, SOWK 2155 and SOWK 2156) during the current semester.

Students typically apply to the BSW Professional Program during the fall semester of their junior / third year. Under certain circumstances, a student will apply to the BSW Professional Program during the spring semester of their junior / third year.

Capstone is a year-long collaborative, experiential and community-engaged project required of seniors. It is designed for students to demonstrate how they can apply what they’ve learned in class with CSWE core competencies.

In the fall semester, students meet in small groups to design and implement community-based social justice projects that incorporate social justice and service. Emphasis is placed on engaging and building relationships with community stakeholders. In the spring semester, student groups continue to work collaboratively and with stakeholders to implement their projects. In late spring student groups present their capstone projects in a poster session at the BSW Capstone Symposium. Students also write an individual reflective report on their experience.

Students earn a total of two credits for their capstone project through their SOWK 5850 BSW Senior Capstone Experience I and SOWK 5851 BSW Senior Capstone Experience II courses. The courses are graded pass / fail.
