I specialize in two key areas: promoting access to mental health and substance use services and understanding differential outcomes associated with mental health and substance use service utilization. My research focuses on vulnerable populations, exploring how individuals within the criminal justice system access mental health and substance use services, how public mental health systems implement medication-assisted treatments for substance use disorders, and the intersection of caregiver needs and child behavioral health issues within the child welfare system. Additionally, I investigate the experiences of individuals with chronic health conditions who face mental health and substance use challenges as well as how housing programs and peer support impact recovery for persons with mental illness.
Since joining the University of Georgia in 2013, I have successfully secured research and training funding from esteemed organizations such as the National Institutes of Health, the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Health Resources and Services Administration, and SAMHSA. My work has been widely published, with numerous peer-reviewed articles in leading substance use, mental health, and social work journals.
I am passionate about advancing the understanding and accessibility of mental health services for underserved communities, contributing to impactful policy changes, and enhancing treatment outcomes.
