BSW Field Education
Update: As of March 25, 2020, BSW students who have completed 120 hours during Spring 2020 semester and are evaluated satisfactorily on their field instructor final evaluation can conclude their agency engagement. See the Spring 2020 Updates section below.Update: As of March 18, 2020, instructions for alternative field education activities for current seniors have been added below, under Remote Field Activities.
Field education experiences offer supportive and demanding opportunities to develop a social work identity and to forge the skills, knowledge, and values necessary to practice generalist social work.
During BSW field education experiences students learn how to practice generalist social work under the direct supervision of a field instructor at a School approved field agency. This “hands on” internship, which is a course, allows students to experience, integrate and practice classroom learning with actual clients, community organizations, and agency programs.
Students intern at the same field agency for both fall and spring semesters on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday for a minimum of 280 clock hours per semester. Concurrent with the field agency internship, students participate weekly in a field integrative practicum. The seminar instructor, who is also the faculty field liaison to the agency and field instructor, monitors student progress in the internship through two on-site evaluations per semester with the student and the agency field instructor.
Eligibility to enter BSW Field Education is determined by acceptance into the BSW Professional Program. Students must make a separate application for placement at a School approved agency. The BSW Field Education Coordinator places students in agencies. That process, along with other information, is outlined during a field education orientation in early spring semester. Additionally, students participate in a field education preparation workshop held a few days prior to the start of fall semester.
For further information please contact the BSW Field Education program coordinator Thomas Artelt, PhD, at (706) 542-5474 or firstname.lastname@example.org.

The School of Social Work has received approval from the University System of Georgia for students to engage in alternative remote field activity beginning Monday, March 23. This represents an exception to the suspension of student academic activity that as of March 18 is in place until March 30, 2020. This exception does not extend to other academic activity and is exclusive to field education.
To fulfill the hours requirements and educational competencies, we are providing alternative field learning activities that can be completed off-site. Examples of alternative field learning activities are listed in the document Alternate Field Learning Activities by competency area. Field instructors/task supervisors may develop alternative field learning activities beyond the examples listed. Students and their field instructor/task supervisor(s) should complete the Field Education Remote Competency Development Planning Sheet. This tool will guide you in creating a plan to continue your academic progress in field. Completed planning sheets must be electronically signed by you and your field instructor with copies submitted to field instructors, faculty liaisons, and your field coordinator. Your faculty liaison will serve as a first level reviewer of your completed plan. Additionally, the Field Office remains available to provide consultation and answer questions via email, Zoom, or phone.
(1) Students may engage remotely in field work effective Monday, March 23, 2020.
(2) Internship hours during this period will be counted toward academic requirements.
(3) Students MUST complete a Field Education Remote Competency Development Planning Sheet.

Field Education and interning are first time experiences for all BSW seniors. Thus students do not know what to expect during field education or how best to navigate or address. The FAQs provided in the BSW Field Manual are designed to provide students with some navigational tools as they grow and develop their professional selves in field education.
Please review the information in the BSW Manual under Field Issues, Concerns and Resources: Student FAQs and Field Instructor’s Replies, and contact Dr. Artelt at email@example.com if you have questions or specific suggestions for additions.
